Wired for Purpose — Week 7: Margin and Recovery

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

The Story

In infrastructure, high utilization looks efficient on paper.

Until something fails.

Then suddenly there’s no flexibility left in the system:

  • no capacity
  • no margin
  • no recovery path

I started realizing I was doing the same thing personally.

Every hour filled.
Every notification answered.
Every moment optimized.

And eventually, even success started feeling noisy.

Not because the work was wrong.

Because there was no room left to think clearly.

The Reflection

Most people associate rest with laziness.

But rest is infrastructure.

It protects:

  • clarity
  • judgment
  • emotional resilience
  • long-term sustainability

Without margin, everything becomes reactive.

And reactive systems eventually become unstable systems.

The healthiest leaders I know build recovery into their lives intentionally.

Not after burnout.

Before it.

The Takeaway

Margin isn’t wasted space. It’s what keeps the system stable.
